Attorneys Monica Vigues Pitan of Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc., and Miriam Harmatz of Florida Legal Services were awarded the Florida Bar Foundation’s 2013 Paul Doyle Children’s Advocacy Award for their successful Children’s Autism Treatment Project. The Project filed a case on behalf of three autistic Miami children, who challenged the Florida Medicaid Agency’s categorical refusal to provide coverage of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), the one evidence based proven and effective treatment for autism. (click here to read more) On September 20, 2013, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit upheld a March 2012 ruling by Judge Joan Lenard requiring Medicaid coverage of ABA. The case has national impact because, although most states mandate that private insurance companies cover ABA, most Medicaid programs do not provide coverage. The award of $5,000 will help the project continue its advocacy for deserving clients in our community.
