Successfully Advocate for Senior Facing Cancer, Left Uninsured & With Large Medical Bills

Julia’s* private health insurance provider retroactively cancelled her policy from November 2022 to March 2023 in the middle of her treatment for cancer, leaving her with over $200,000 in medical bills and no healthcare coverage when she needed it most.  Unbeknownst to her, a lapse in premium payments caused by a credit card autopay issue placed her in this precarious position.  The insurance company failed to provide Julia with advance notice informing her she would lose coverage due to the missed payments.

At her most vulnerable moment, Julia sought the assistance of Legal Services.  Senior Staff Attorney Daniel Rowinsky Quintian filed appeals, including internal and external reviews, challenging the insurance provider’s unjust policy cancellation which was imposing a significant threat to Julia’s health and financial well-being.  Because of our advocacy, the insurance provider ultimately agreed to retroactively reinstate Julie’s health insurance policy and reevaluate all her past medical claims.  Eventually, a settlement of the incurred past medical expenses marked a victorious conclusion to Julia’s ordeal, and she can now turn her full attention to getting essential medical treatment without the pressure of a large medical debt.
