McDermott Will & Emery’s Pro Bono Team Helps Strengthen Human Resources and Employment Practices for Nonprofit Healthy Little Havana

In partnership with the Legal Services of Greater Miami, partners of McDermott Will & Emery Elvira Kras and Elena Otero have provided pro bono counsel to Live Healthy Little Havana Inc. (“Healthy Little Havana”), helping the nonprofit strengthen their human resources and employment practices.

Elvira and Elena’s work will help ensure the organization’s continued growth and success in fulfilling its mission to promote healthy living among the residents of the Little Havana neighborhood in Miami.

To enhance the organization’s people-related procedures, Elvira and Elena have:

  • Advised on employment best practices and answered specific employment-related questions in real time, accounting for the unique support that the organization provides to the community.

  • Overhauled Healthy Little Havana’s employment policies, making revisions and drafting new recommended documents.

  • Provided recommendations regarding onboarding and offboarding, personnel record retention and record and people management.

“We are very grateful to Elvira and Elena for their outstanding representation, professionalism, expertise and excellent service,” said Raissa Fernandez, Project Manager of Healthy Little Havana.

In its day-to-day activities, Healthy Little Havana advocates for and supports the development of a thriving and healthy community with the aim to provide the residents of the neighborhood with more educational opportunities for employment; affordable, quality, and stable housing; safe and accessible public spaces; and access to quality health care.

“We value our relationship with Legal Services to deliver crucially needed legal work to small businesses and nonprofits working to better the lives of their communities,” said Elvira.
