Pro Bono Attorneys Protect Tenant with Health Struggles from Eviction

Pro bono attorneys at Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP (Hunton) secured a settlement that preserved our client's home and enabled her to recuperate from recent surgeries. Attorneys Juan Enjamio and Aidan Gross successfully represented the tenant in eviction proceedings by crafting a settlement agreement that allowed her to stay in her home.

In early 2024, Adanna*, who is 50 years old and immigrated from Nigeria, underwent two emergency surgeries, rendering her unable to work for two months. Struggling with recovery and financial strain, she fell behind on rent payments and faced imminent eviction. Despite Adanna’s efforts to negotiate a payment plan with the landlord, she found no option but to seek assistance from Legal Services.

Discovering the landlord's noncompliance with Florida law for failing to maintain the property, including unrepaired broken windows, the pro bono team mounted a strategic defense against the eviction. A settlement agreement was reached where the landlord committed to repairing the broken windows, reducing the outstanding rent, and devising a reasonable payment plan that allowed the tenant to settle debts while remaining in her home for the duration of the lease.

The dedication of pro bono attorneys, combined with their legal acumen and commitment to justice, led to this successful outcome. “We are proud of the work we are doing with Legal Services and in the pro bono space in South Florida. We are appreciative of the opportunity and glad that we were able to assist this client in fighting the eviction and keeping her in her home,” said Juan Enjamio, Managing Partner of Hunton’s Miami Office.
